Matt Rugg

Matt Rugg (1935 – 2020) is a highly regarded abstract artist.

He studied and then taught the Basic Course in Fine Art at Newcastle following National Service, and later taught at Chelsea School of Art (1965 – 1994).

The career retrospective, “Matt Rugg, Connecting Form”, curated by Dr Harriet Sutcliffe for the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle in 2023 – 24, was well-reviewed.

The accompanying documentary, “Matt Rugg, How to be an Artist”, now on YouTube , and the monograph by Michael Bird with Harriet Sutcliffe, published by Lund Humphries, encapsulate Rugg’s approaches to making and teaching art.

 

Matt Rugg exhibited at The Cut in 2017, Notations – between drawing and sculpture and his work was shown again in  2022,  Notations – passages and intervals.
