My work of the last seven years attempts to push the idea of the painting as a structural object. I want to show the picture plane sometimes in tension or opposition with the structural support but always manipulated by it. These works have a familiarity, as though they are a part of something but without the viewer being able to make a positive identification. They are intended to be hard to place in time, as though they could be at the start of a construction or perhaps just a survivor or memento of something more significant.
Thameside Works 2020-2024, New work by Patrick O’Sullivan
Patrick O’Sullivan’s work has attempted to follow a practice that is simultaneously associated with both Painting and Sculpture. O’Sullivan creates constructions intended for the wall, and objects that live in real space that develop an interplay between colour and matter, with the intent of celebrating both whilst denying the primacy of either.
In this new, One Person Show at the Cut, O’Sullivan is exhibiting recent work created whilst resident at Thameside Studios in London. O’Sullivan has found himself with a view of the River Thames taking in the Thames Barrier and the ever-changing face of Docklands London. These forms and shapes that create the city have become internal landscapes in O’Sullivan’s attempt to make sense of the conflicting disciplines he uses.
