Photographer and film-maker Howard Sooley worked collaboratively with Derek Jarman on his garden at Prospect Cottage, Dungeness from 1991 until Jarman’s death in 1994.
Jarman said of Howard Sooley There is no aggression in Howard Sooley’s camera, this is what makes his work so elegant.
Howard’s Dungeness photographs were published in the book Derek Jarman’s Garden (1995) and in 2020 the Garden Museum, London presented the exhibition Howard Sooley: Photographs of Prospect Cottage.

Sooley’s writings and photography about gardening and food have featured frequently in The Guardian, The Observer and the Observer Food Monthly and he has also collaborated on book projects with other gardeners including Christopher Lloyd.
Since 2009, together with Allan Jenkins, Sooley has tended a biodynamic allotment in London, which Jenkins describes in his book Plot 29: A Memoir (2018) which also features Sooley’s photographs.
These new photographs on display at The Cut have been taken in London over the last two years.
