Exhibition Description
To mark the publication of her artist’s book photo-essay ‘Halesworth, An Alternative Guide‘ Eva Bachmann took a group of walkers around Halesworth, visiting the locations of images in the book.
This book came from Eva’s experiences on The Summer Project, 2024.
Eva Bachmann explored Halesworth through a series of photographs capturing alternative landmarks that reveal the town’s unique character. She created a booklet of 36 images, presented with a fold-out map as a sleeve.
This series offers an observation from the perspective of an outsider, aiming to reveal the specificity of place. It focuses on subtle, and sometimes humorous, interactions between the built environment and its surroundings.
Rather than highlighting well-known landmarks or natural beauty, the images draw attention to spatial nuances and often overlooked details, that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Some moments are tied to a particular time of day; others stand out for their unconventional or almost performative appearance. Together, they form a visual fabric that defines the place through my personal lens.
Rooted in a subjective experience, the images are intended to resonate with both those familiar with the area and those intrigued by the less conventional portrayal of a place.
You may view a slideshow of images from Eva’s book on her website.
As Eva and the walkers found during their tour of Halesworth, quite a few images in the book no longer correspond with what is to be seen in some locations.
